THE PLANNING CYCLE

There are three parts to the process of making it happen:

1. Planning

2. Education

3. Execution

Planning

What are you actually going to do? How are you going to ditch your dead weight? What’s the plan? Think about the resources you have to help you. What time, money and energy is going to be required? Are you going to need to build up a buffer financially so you can make the transition less stressful?

Think about the logistics of the change in as much detail as possible. Let’s go back to the earlier example where you really hate your job. Storming out in a blaze of glory might feel great in the moment but it’s almost never a smart move, unless there are exceptional circumstances. For a start, this is usually an emotional response and you just end up looking like a dill. You won’t get a reference and research has shown it’s much easier to find a new job when you are already employed. Instead, create a plan that allows you to move on with grace but as quickly as possible.

Revise and update your CV, register on an employment website, or look on professional networking sites like LinkedIn. Perhaps chat with a recruitment consultant to help get a better idea of what you are looking for. Have you ever considered starting your own business? These are some easy examples to get the ball rolling. Do you really know what you want to do instead, or are you just desperate to get away from your current situation? Presumably you will still have your expenses and financial outgoings whether you have a job or not, so, unless you are heading straight into a new position, it would be wise to have a few bucks in the piggy bank.

When you have a plan, and have prepared for various eventualities, then you are in a much better position to make a successful transition from where you are to where you want to be. A plan will also help you to limit the stress and uncertainty of the decision.

Education

The best thing you can do for yourself during a period of change is to get yourself educated and informed about what’s ahead. So, before leaving your job, find out more about the current state of the industry you’re moving into. Are there many alternative jobs in your chosen field? Do you know what you should be paid in accordance with your experience and qualifications? Do you need to upgrade your skills? You need to educate yourself about the alternatives. Maybe invest in some coaching or a personality profiling test, which can help you ascertain what profession may be better suited to you. Information gives us certainty and confidence. Your job is to gather as much as possible about the situation you are in and the one you are heading into.

The hardest part of change is the uncertainty that it creates. Remember the Hero’s Journey we touched on in Chapter 1? We move from a comfortable known world to an unknown world or situation and we don’t always know what to expect.
